By permanently binding to postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, it mimics acetylcholine but resists degradation by the insect's enzymes. This causes fatal, continuous nerve firing and paralysis. Its systemic movement through the plant provides continuous protection against sucking pests.
